Liquid Adrenaline Water Sports of T&T

Image
If you like a challenge and love the thought of soaring above the water, then, you would love this experience. Dolphin boarding is the ultimate new adrenaline sport to hit Trinidad that will leave you wanting more! The water jetpack looks like something straight out of a James Bond Film. It's the closest thing man can hope to get to flying like a superhero. You have to be there to believe it! Just about anyone can have an experience like mine within minutes of strapping into a dolphin board.  The Dolphin board is a water jetpack which shoots out water from the boots which consequently propels you up into the air. A thrilling experience for those adrenaline junkies, the jetpacks can launch you up to a height of 10 metres as you dash across the water. Are you not psyched by this? It is definitely worth the experience. You are probably wondering how difficult this is. Let's just say I drank a lot of seawater as I struggled to do my first rise,...

Peechon Cove

Image
Can't decide on where to go over the weekend or what to do during the summer? You don't have to as Peechon Cove is the place to be. Though it's a mere pocket of sand -  located on the north coast, en route to Maracas - it is undoubtedly one of Trinidad's most scenic beaches. Rugged, wild, and untouched are just some of the words used to describe this Cove. Shockingly, Peechon Cove remains steadily under the radar as the trip here involves a little hike, which keeps it un-crowded. Nonetheless, this secluded mountain-coddled Cove has to be one of my absolute favourite destinations in Trinidad.   The obscure location also makes Peechon Cove an idyllic getaway for natural relaxation.  Com'on, is this not picture perfect ? What makes this beach so unique is the amazing waterfall which falls approximately thirty feet into the ocean - such a sight to see! After hiking to the cove, you can enjoy a revitalising bath surrounded by nat...

Bamboo Cathedral

Image
Let's take a look at another unique feature of Trinidad's landscape that surely confirms that true beauty can be found in the most inconspicuous places. Tucked away in a forested area of Chaguaramas, one can observe an expanse known as the Bamboo Cathedral.  For years, this setting has been a popular destination for people to experience the splendour of  Mother Nature. The view is, even more, breath-taking when having a pleasant stroll at twilight.  What makes this place one of Trinidad's most popular destinations is the stretch of roadway that cuts through the dense vegetation, transporting visitors into a landscape of soaring bamboo stalks that bend towards each other above the roadway forming arches reminiscent of those found in cathedrals. The roadway is approximately 300m long and is accessible directly from Tucker Valley Road, Chaguaramas. Its generous width accommodates both pedestrians and cyclists, allowing people to experience the landscape at thei...

La Vega Estate

Image
Thinking of relaxing amongst nature and basking in its beauty, then why not take a trip to La Vega Estate? It is the perfect place to bring family and friends for that special getaway on the island of Trinidad. This hideaway is located in Gran Couva, Central Trinidad and comprises of 250 acres. It was a former cocoa estate and has been transformed into a unique combination of pool facility, Plant Nursery, Garden Centre and Nature and Recreation Park.  My trip to this estate was absolute relaxation. The mood was serene allowing my family and I to really enjoy the scenery at La Vega Estate. There are many popular attractions at this venue which include a tropical garden with a bountiful array of fruit and flowering trees, placid Lake George, scenic nature trails and clean, spacious picnic areas. One of my favorite spots is the Bamboo Nursery which is surrounded by water and has a ceiling of outstretched bamboo branches arching overhead; a truly phenomenal spectacle. ...

Turtle Watching

Image
Have you ever wanted to be in the presence of prehistoric animals? Then don't miss out on this opportunity to be arm's length away from the ancient nesting ritual of the majestic leatherback sea turtles. Our shores have become two of the world's most important nesting grounds for the leatherback turtles. Leatherbacks are the largest turtles on earth and can reach up to eight feet long and weigh more than 2,000 pounds.  In my opinion, leatherback turtle-watching is one of Trinidad's most incredible experiences and something every Trinidadian should get to see; truly, those who have observed it in person describe it as emotional and moving. If you visit the right place at the right time, this can be your experience too. Both Grand Riviere and Matura are well-known beaches in Northeast Trinidad where turtles frequent. These beaches are restricted to the general public to assist with the elimination and reduction in poaching; permits are required to visit du...

Rappelling in Chaguaramas

Image
If it's an adrenaline-fuelled adventure you crave or want to simply try something new, then why not give this rappelling experience in Harts Cut, Chaguaramas a go? Photo Courtesy of Road Trip TT Normally I am terrified of heights, but after hearing all the hype surrounding rappelling, I was adamant to not let fear hold me back. This turned out to be an experience that greatly impacted my life. Rappelling is the method of descending a vertical rock face by means of a double rope passed under the thigh and over the opposite shoulder.  The sight may look daunting, to begin with, descending a 90ft wall, but it's one of the most thrilling activities you will ever do. Trust me, this rappelling adventure experience will put you into that moment of feeling WOW! I remembered being so scared to take that step over the edge of the cliff, but once I did it was euphoric. I am so glad I didn't back out and was able to face one of my fears.  You have to be careful of ...

La Forêt Beach

Image
If you are like me and love the beautiful, clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, then, you don't want to miss out on this one! Hidden on the Northeast coast of the island is one of Trinidad most beautiful beaches called La Forêt. It is truly a breath-taking beach and I could understand why it is one of Toco's best-kept secret. Surrounded by lush green forest, it offers a postcard-perfect environment that is hard to find elsewhere in Trinidad. Trust me, I didn't expect much at first on my first visit, but I was truly surprised by the beauty that awaited me. Take a look for yourself, do you not agree? This pristine wide stretch of soft golden sand and edging turquoise waters is just great for sloughing off the heat of the town or ideal for visitors seeking a combination of natural beauty and relaxation. This magical bit of coastline is located 2 miles south of Galera Point, and nestled between a coconut estate and Toco Forest Reserve. It can be a little tricky to rea...
