Bamboo Cathedral

Let's take a look at another unique feature of Trinidad's landscape that surely confirms that true beauty can be found in the most inconspicuous places.

Tucked away in a forested area of Chaguaramas, one can observe an expanse known as the Bamboo Cathedral. For years, this setting has been a popular destination for people to experience the splendour of  Mother Nature. The view is, even more, breath-taking when having a pleasant stroll at twilight.

What makes this place one of Trinidad's most popular destinations is the stretch of roadway that cuts through the dense vegetation, transporting visitors into a landscape of soaring bamboo stalks that bend towards each other above the roadway forming arches reminiscent of those found in cathedrals.

The roadway is approximately 300m long and is accessible directly from Tucker Valley Road, Chaguaramas. Its generous width accommodates both pedestrians and cyclists, allowing people to experience the landscape at their will. It is a serene and quiet place and even though it can get extremely busy during weekends, the natural calm and its connection to nature is maintained.

My first encounter with the Bamboo Cathedral was so astounding that I just had to make a second trip, not even a month later, but a few days later. I absolutely love it here!! It oozes a somewhat magical effect that will leave you in a dreamlike daze. It's no wonder why it has become a common backdrop for newlyweds and their photographers.

This place is also an abode to several birds and monkeys. If you are lucky, you will be afforded the opportunity to witness monkeys frolicking among the bamboos. Don't be alarmed by the occasional howls! After all, you are in a national park.

Do you not wish to be part of this experience? It will certainly leave you with an impression.

At the end of the bamboo stretch, the roadway proceeds up an incline about 600 meters above sea level. There is a surprise at the top of the hill that would leave you in awe. It is definitely worth seeking out. Just make the climb and all will be revealed.
