Mermaid Pool

To the average person, Mathura, located on the northeastern coast of Trinidad, is a village we pass by on our way to Toco. There seems to be very little happening there except for the selling of fruits, vegetables, and honey. The truth is, however, there is a hidden beauty nestled in the lush Pine and Mora forest of Matura called the Mermaid Pool, also known as Matura Basin. Over the years, visits to the Mermaid Pool have increased in popularity and it has become a favourite destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers, including myself.

Doesn't the picture above look enticing!

The hike to the river is relatively easy and once you get there you are transported into an adventure land. The sun shines on the crystal clear waters reflecting vibrant colours of emerald green. The trees along the river bank provide shade from the sun and add to the splendor of this picturesque landscape.

Upon our arrival at our destination, the Mermaid Pool did not disappoint! The serenity of the Mermaid Pool creates a relaxing sensation; to sit on the rocks and sway one's feet in the soothing waters of the river, appreciating the scenery and becoming one with nature. We sat there for hours, just cooling off from the athletic hike. Even schools of small fishes could be seen making their way up the river to call this destination their home. It may seem a perfect getaway for both man and fish. I definitely thought so, but you need to experience it yourself.

Trust me, this is a pool that will leave you in a state of wonder. Further upstream there are also additional basins to discover and a long trek through the forest will lead to Manulot Falls another truly amazing destination.

The hike to the pool is approximately 30-40 minutes and the trek is not only picturesque, exquisite and scenic but one that the entire family can enjoy. The best time to visit this pool is from January - August.
